South Africa 194 for 4 (de Kock 74, Netravalkar 2-21, Harmeet 2-24) defeated the United States 176 for 6 (Gous 80*, Rabada 3-18) by 18 runs. In yet another gripping match at the T20 World Cup 2024, South Africa has continued its trend of close finishes, this time against a surprisingly resilient USA team. The pitch at the venue was a batsman's paradise, yet the USA managed to contain South Africa to a score just below 200. Quinton de Kock’s first half-century of the tournament was crucial, providing the initial momentum for South Africa. De Kock, who has had a mixed tournament so far, finally showcased his true potential in what might be his swansong on the international stage.
Despite de Kock's brilliance, the USA’s bowlers, particularly Saurabh Netravalkar and Harmeet Singh, managed to pull things back. The duo shared three wickets between them, conceding just 15 runs. This impressive middle-over spell by the USA spinners was key in keeping South Africa from running away with the game. However, South Africa’s middle-order resilience shone through as Heinrich Klaasen and Tristan Stubbs put together a critical partnership of 53 runs for the fifth wicket. This partnership ensured that South Africa posted a competitive total, providing their bowlers something to defend.

The USA's chase began on a promising note with Steven Taylor leading the charge. His aggressive approach put early pressure on the South African bowlers. However, Kagiso Rabada’s experience came to the fore as he struck twice in the Powerplay, removing Taylor and another top-order batsman, which levelled the playing field.
South Africa then tightened the screws with their spin duo, Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi. They bowled economical spells, maintaining the pressure on the USA's batsmen through the middle overs. However, it was the South African-born Andries Gous who nearly turned the game on its head. His unbeaten 80 was a masterclass in batting under pressure. Gous, along with Harmeet Singh, put together a 91-run stand for the sixth wicket, which was the second-highest partnership for the sixth wicket or lower in T20 World Cup history. This stand brought the USA tantalizingly close to an upset, with only 28 runs needed off the last two overs.
Despite the pressure, Rabada and Anrich Nortje held their nerve. Rabada’s crucial penultimate over saw him dismiss Harmeet Singh, breaking the threatening partnership and effectively dashing the USA's hopes. Nortje then closed out the final over efficiently, securing South Africa’s victory and their first points in the Super Eight stage.

Quinton de Kock’s return to form was a significant highlight for South Africa. After a string of low scores in the previous matches, de Kock finally delivered. His innings were a blend of patience and aggression, as he waited until the fourth over to unleash his powerful strokes. The highlight of his innings was the onslaught on Jasdeep Singh, where de Kock hit three consecutive sixes. This blitzkrieg over cost the USA 28 runs and significantly boosted South Africa’s scoring rate during the Powerplay.
De Kock continued to dominate, bringing up his fifty with a six off Corey Anderson, and eventually scoring 74, his highest in this tournament. His performance not only provided a strong start but also set the tone for South Africa’s innings.
